It's Not Easy Being Green

So says Kermit the Frog, and so say I. (While Kermit is referring to the color of his skin, I'm talking about green in the environmental sense.) But after watching the Oprah show on Earth Day, I was so nauseated by the videos showing what pollution has done to our oceans, I made a resolution to go green. It's not that I wasn't being environmentally conscious, I just didn't realize how much more I could be doing to clean up my world and prevent further pollution.
If you still believe going green is too time consuming, too much work, too expensive etc., view the highlights of the Earth Day show on Oprah.com and revisit your decision. If this doesn't jolt you out of complacency, check your pulse.
As one of Oprah's guests, Fabien Cousteau, said, "We are all interconnected." What we are doing to the planet is killing our children and ourselves. Begin somewhere, anywhere. Everyone can do something. You and your family are worth the effort! There are great resources, ideas and coupons on Oprah's website. Please, let's save our planet from a premature death.

More commentsThanks for the information, Grammy. We just recently started saving aluminum cans again after a few years of putting them in the trash. I am amazed at how quickly they have accumulated. We have been made stewards of this earth and I do believe we are to take care of it.Please log in to respond to this comment. That is the best reason to care for our earth, Lorrie. Grammy,I agree that all town, townships and cities should be recycling. I've been doing it for 20 years, 1st in London, Ontario and since moving back to the States, here in New Jersey. But there is more to it than that. I'm over 50 and I was raised green. Like turning off the lights when you leave a room, turning off the water when brushing teeth, not wasting food or beverages, and hanging your clothes out to dry. Cothes dryers are one of the most expensive appliances to run but somehow I don't think that those who live in the upscale planned communities would be willing to go that far!In addition, all of the chemicals we are putting in processed foods are doing tremendous damage to our bodies. I cook homemade and neither my children nor I have allergies. Not bad considering I'm a Jersey girl! Thanks for a good write and a most timely topic,NancyPlease log in to respond to this comment. You are my inspiration, Nancy. I was reared without hot and cold running water until I was about 5, so I know what "green" used to be. When that's all you know, it's not a hardship. As I got older and out on my own, I shunned that lifestyle, much to my detriment. Now, much older and wiser, I am going to give it my best shot and influence the little ones I'm helping rear. Thanks so much for your comments and for your commitment to doing the right thing and the follow through, which is so important! Please log in to respond to this comment.

I have long thought this planet wasn't really 'ours' to begin with, since there are so many other species which share it's resources and beauty. And yet, we as humans must take stewardship and be responsible. Why? Because you don't see dogs or fish leaving trash by the side of the road (although the pigeons are remarkably cavalier in their . . . um . . . deposits) or choking the atmosphere.Nicely done. Please log in to respond to this comment.Thank you for commenting. hi grammy,i think, like anything else, it just takes a little getting used to. it wasn't so long ago that we switched to recyclable containers for our plastic and tin cans and glass. It's been years, but i'm speaking in the realm of things.since we started, it comes very easily now.thanks for pointing out the sites.i think kermit should be the mascot for "going green!"take care,my best regards, sue thomPlease log in to respond to this comment.Dear Sue,Thanks for sharing how you're helping keep Ma Earth clean. I sure hope I can do as well! As for Kermit being a mascot, I wish I'd thought of that. He sure is a natural!Best wishes always,GrammyPlease log in to respond to this comment.
